Pihos Invites Participants to Showcase Spelling Talent in Statewide Senior Spelling Bee
(Posted 5/15/2008) - State Rep. Sandy Pihos (R-Glen Ellyn) is inviting anyone over the age of 50 to participate in the first-ever statewide Senior Spelling Bee.
Local senior spelling bees will be held throughout the state in June; however interested area seniors can mark their calendars to participate in the event being held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at York Township Senior Center, 1502 S. Meyers Road, Lombard.
“This is a unique and wonderful opportunity for seniors to showcase their spelling talents,” Pihos said. “People generally think that spelling bees are only for students to improve their spelling and word vocabulary, but this is also a fun way for seniors to interact and have a fun time while testing their skills.”
Winners of the spelling bees will advance to the regional semi finals. The state finals will be held at the 2008 Illinois State Fair on Senior Day, Monday, Aug. 11.
The contest is open to anyone ages 50 and over. Each participant must pre-register at the location by calling Mary at Rep. Pihos’ office at (630) 858-8855 or by emailing community@sandrapihos.com. The order of contestants will be randomly selected. Refreshments and prizes will be available. All are welcome to stop by the event to cheer on contestants.
A practice round will be held first so everyone is familiar with the rules. Contestants must begin spelling the word within 60 seconds after the pronouncer gives the word. All rules will be clearly defined at the event. The first, second and third place winners will receive a prize.
“I welcome anyone over 50 to come out and join us for this fun event,” Pihos said. “Don’t miss this chance to test your skills and show your talent to the community.”
The statewide spelling bee is offered in conjunction with the association of Illinois Senior Centers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, and the Illinois Department of Aging.
